City Council Unanimously Votes to Approve Consideration for Property Tax Increase

The Coppell City Council met and approved consideration of a 7.78% ad valorem Property tax rate increase and set 2 public hearings and a final vote for the increase.

1st Public Hearing: 8/25 at 730p
Special Called Meeting: 9/1 at 6p

Meeting to adopt Tax Rate: 9/8

Mayor Jayne Peters made an impassioned plea for discussion, describing the worst economic times since the great depression. She stated that Coppell families were struggling and drowning. She complimented the City Staff on the lean budget but clearly stated that 'this is not the time for a tax rate increase.'

She made a public offer to meet with any group, organization, or interested citizens to further discuss the proposed tax rate increase.

However, Council Member's Franklin, Faught, Tunnell, Mahalik and Brancheau voted unanimously in favor of the proposed tax rate increase.

The next scheduled Council Meeting is August 25, 2009 at 730p and a Special called meeting is scheduled for September 1, 2009 at 6pm.

  1. Why is there such a disconnect between the desires of the citizens of Coppell and these elected officials. Let's call a special election.

  2. We need to vote these clowns out or recall them. They have screwed this town up since they have been in office. I dont know why they dont listen to the people of Coppell. Tunnell is so clueless anyway

  3. What's the procedure for a recall? First it was the Manara Academy issue and now this? It's a shame the mayor has no power and the council has it all. She has been with the citizens every step and we need to make sure everyone understands that. This council operates like a totalitarian government and WILL be voted out at the first opportunity

  4. I am in agreement about all the city council members need to go. I, too, am wondering about how to get a recall election. It is a shame that Coppell does work under the 'weak mayor' government. Of course, I am not for sure Jane Peters does not go opposite to just try to satisfy all the people they know they are making angry. She basically made the same speech concerning Manara, so who knows how she really feels. I am hearing more and more horrific things they are doing to people. Only one example I heard is a long time resident who owns property in old downtown wanted to tear down an old barn on her property (not even seen from the street) and was told she could not tear it down. Also she was told she could not put in a B&B in old downtown, but Turnnell wants some small quaint hotel in old downtown. All of these things just make me wonder and very upset. Does anyone know how to start a grassroot effort for a recall?.
