Has Coppell Lost Representative Government?

Is it OK for the City Council to ignore the citizens of Coppell? The recent debacle over the proposed tax rate increase is a glaring example of an ineffective council. When the council chambers are filled with a unified citizenry and the council refuses to listen to the desires of its citizens, it has lost its purpose.

Can the City Council refuse to communicate with the citizens of Coppell? The mayor pointedly asked for budget deliberations during the August 11 Council meeting. Council members remained silent and declined, through their lack of participation, to make any comment.

Is it OK for the Council to ignore input from the community? Biz Haddock presented over 120 letters from citizen of Coppell opposing the proposed tax rate increase to members of the City Council. The Council failed to take the citizen’s input seriously.

Can the Council ignore the economy? Bob Cleavinger told the council that this is not the time for a tax rate increase due to the state of the economy. According to Mayor Peters, this is the worse downturn in the economy since the Great Depression. The council members are completely ignoring the economic realities that the citizens are facing on a day-to-day basis.

The city council is out-of-touch with the desires and wishes of its constituency. When the elected body of officials ceases to listen to the citizenry and fail to communicate, they have failed to fulfill the role for which they were originally elected. The Coppell City Council has clearly failed to meet the expectations of the citizens of Coppell. It is time for a change. A paradigm shift is not going to be sufficient.

  1. Do you really think 120 letters represents a majority? Maybe 40 years ago that would be the case, but today? The fact is that the majority has spoken, albeit in silence, and the council has listened.

  2. There's one in every crowd....here's the next step:
Get the count of Coppell residents who were registered voters as of the last election.
Then get the count of how many of those actually voted in the last (local) election.
You might be surprised at what percentage 120 signatures or letters represents.
With this new grass roots effort taking place to do something about this out of control council, we will see who has the last word. We are a "do nothing" and "sit on the sidelines" society. That is changing effective now.
