Should the City of Coppell Raise Property Taxes Next Year?

  1. With average tax rolls up 5.43% in 2008-2009 and expected to rise again in the 2009-2010 fiscal year, I don't see any reason why taxes need to increase. Additionally, with three fairly large developments taking place (Alexander Court, Arbor Manor, and the Chateaus of Coppell), tax rolls will continue to add to the general fund.

  2. I have a remark for Mr. Mahalik. I don't understand your statement that "There has to be a 5 cent tax increase... it's just a matter of when..." I'd like clarification on why 5 cents and not 4 1/2 cents or 2 1/2 cents. Vehemently defending a 5 cent increase, period, end of story makes me very uneasy that this is becoming a personal argument versus a sound business decision.
Your job as a council member isn't easy, because you and the other citizens have very limited opportunities for 2 way discussions on issues. When citizens are in opposition to your proposal, it may feel as though the people simply think you are dead wrong and disapprove of the job you are doing. That is not the case. Citizens will have differing ideas as to how our city should be run. I ask you and all the other council members, without taking it as a personal offense, to be open to discussion on this issue. Thanks for listening.
